On Wednesday, August 26, Johnson Hall's Lively Lunches series will present the Maine Squeeze Accordion Ensemble, five accordion players and a percussionist from around Maine who play both international music, from traditional foot-tapping polkas to waltzes to zydeco, and original tunes.
Over the past twenty years, hundreds of hikers of all ages have hiked to the top of the Town of Winthrop's historic Mount Pisgah Fire Tower. Unfortunately, in recent years there has been a great deal of unauthorized motorized vehicle on the paths.
One result of this rainy spring and summer has been disastrous erosion on many gravel and camp roads, adding sediment and phosphorus to our lakes and ponds. It is often that sort of "eye opening" that is needed for us to invest in the work or maintenance we should have been doing all along.
This past week I was fishing with my good friends Dick and Jean Dempster over on Great Pond, when, amidst all the smiles and fish stories, Dick said something intriguing, borderline profound! He was talking about golf, a game at which he excels. He said, "It's funny. Even if you have a bad round of golf, when you hit a great shot on [hole] 18, you tend to forget about all the lousy shots you made earlier." That might be true for golf, but it's really true for fishing!
