Once More to the Village by Boat

Summertime, oh summertime . . . memories of Great Pond, of boating across that glorious expanse of open water or along the tree-shaded shoreline, and either way slowing carefully for that certain destination, the mouth of the Belgrade Stream, or The Channel, as so many folks always called it. It was a ritual since the beginning of the 1900's, but now the docks in the Village have been closed off and are seriously deteriorating, boaters cruise wistfully to the limit of the bridge and leave without stopping and shopping, and children are being brought up without the tradition of the trip by boat to town. Protecting the Cobbossee Watershed One Foot at a Time

A team of eleven local youth members have spent their summer working alongside, and at times in, the 28 lakes and streams of the Cobbossee Watershed. Part of the Friends of the Cobbossee Watershed's "Slow-the-Flow" program, this year's Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) team consists of 11 young adults working under the leadership of Program Director Jay Lindsey.
