The year is 2009. We will be reminded of history, including the reading of the original Declaration of Independence through the celebrations at Old Fort Western in Augusta. We will be reminded of ongoing bravery and sacrifice in current wars abroad through the flyover of F-16 Fighter Jets in Winslow. And yet certain things have remained unchanged since 1776 — parades and picnics, decorations in red, white, and blue, children's activities, hot dogs, strawberry shortcake, ice cream, and fireworks — simple themes that stand for great dreams.
For as long as man has been living near the water, he has been disposing of wastewater nearby. Until at least the early 20th century this usually meant disposing of wastewater directly into the lake or stream with no treatment. Eventually, wastewater treatment became more sophisticated.
Many of us prefer things to be as they always have been. In the case of land use, nothing ever stays the same. As we look around Kennebec County we see that many municipalities are struggling with the concept of planning.
You just never know what's going to happen when you go on a fishing trip in the Belgrade Lakes region. That's the joy of fishing here. One day it can be smallmouth bass, followed by white perch or crappie, maybe a little trout trolling to change things up, or even a mighty northern pike to add a little chaos in the boat. The last week has been a perfect example of all the Belgrades have to offer for many local fishermen.
