Dear Readers:

Welcome to Summertime 2009! Welcome to the greening of the land and the vistas of open waters, to the warmth of the summer sun and the freedom of t-shirts and flip-flops. Welcome to the hum of the mosquito and the call of the loon — and to the many other sounds and sights of the season that call up favorite memories and add to the anticipation of this summer, too.

This season again the Summertime calendars will focus on wholesome, family-oriented activities and events, our columnists will supply sources of information about area fishing, education, stewardship, our covers will feature timely historical, environmental and seasonal topics, and the remainder of the paper will provide an awesome sampling of what's going on and what's coming up.

This season again, we especially thank our many advertisers for being our support team. They represent an excellent array of products and services — a true guide for readers to use, and they provide welcome advice, understanding and smiles to the region's visitors and vacationers.

Summertime in the Belgrades has changed and evolved over its eighteen years but like the beloved region it represents, Summertime also has remained refreshingly the same. 2009 starts with a busy weekend, one of many to follow, so representative of the offerings of the region: National Trails Day activities, the Eighth Annual Fiber Frolic at the Windsor Fairgrounds, Canoe and Kayak expeditions, Open Houses, Reenactments, theater, music, the list goes on.

Yes, there is much to do, but there's also the option to just go to a park, or a boat launch, a playground or a picnic site, a back road or a byway — to relax, do nothing but relish the moment . . . enjoy ice cream, pat your pet, hug your child or grandchild.

If you have something to share with us as we make our rounds, we'd love to hear from you, be it suggestions, news, or just a chat about the weather.

To a good and memorable summer . . .

Esther, Erle and all the staff!
