Summer brings many simple and age-old pleasures, such as paddling in a canoe on a sunny day.
Summer arrives, Maine-style, capriciously, magically, and with all the hopes and promises of some of the best days of life. It brings welcome consistencies amidst a time of global shifts and economic changes. It offers a buffer against personal challenges and daily worries. It provides diversion from other places, other seasons, other schedules.
Welcome to Summertime 2009! Welcome to the greening of the land and the vistas of open waters, to the warmth of the summer sun and the freedom of t-shirts and flip-flops. Welcome to the hum of the mosquito and the call of the loon — and to the many other sounds and sights of the season that call up favorite memories and add to the anticipation of this summer, too.
He succeeded where over 700 others had tried and perished. A hundred years ago, on April 6, 1909, Admiral Robert E. Peary reached the North Pole, raised the American flag, made scientific observations, and remained for about 30 hours. His accomplishment, following 23 years of meticulous planning and thwarted attempts, was significant, and so are his Maine connections.
The Kennebec County Soil & Water Conservation District (KCSWCD) will be working on many projects in many watersheds this field season. One of our focus areas for this season will be in the Cobbossee Stream and Pleasant Pond watersheds in the towns of Litchfield, Richmond, Gardiner and West Gardiner.

Making the ownership and use of wooden boats effortless is the goal of Brightside. Started in June 2008, the year-old business is already bustling with boats, plans, and dreams. Projects include rentals, storage, maintenance and restoration, with the latter supplying a fascinating view of history, craftsmanship, and passion for visitors to the busy shop where eight wooden boats are currently at various stages of work from bare frame to final painting.
