Just Being Good Neighbors

Long Wooden Ramp

The ramp to the camp.

It took 11 workers 11-plus hours to make one woman's dream — access to her lake cottage on Great Pond — come true. And, like the good old-fashioned building bees of times past, this one, too, with neighbor helping neighbor, shows once again what makes this area special.

"No one has fallen in love with the lake like they have," says next-door neighbor Mary Chris Bulger of Nan and Lee Urban, the couple who became committed weekend regulars — a commitment that deepened after Nan became ill with ALS a year ago March and Lee subsequently lost sight in one eye. When getting a wheelchair down to their cottage became impossible, Lee approached Mary Chris about maybe cutting across her yard.

What happened next was a construction. Contractor Steve McCarthy who was working at the Bulger cottage talked with his boss, Paul Lynch, and a few other fellow builders about constructing a ramp. He also talked with Mike Hammond who donated lumber and supplies from Hammond Lumber Company. They met one Saturday over coffee and donuts supplied by neighbor Ann Pezzella (who also served hot dogs at noon) and the work began.

It took 11 workers 11+ hours to make one woman's dream come true. These weekends Nan and Lee can be where her dreams are — in her lake cottage on Great Pond.
