Like a water skier being towed by a seaplane, summer is flying fast.
Meet Katie Jacobs, one of twenty-five Courtesy Boat Inspectors hired in 2008 by the Belgrade Regional Conservation Alliance to work on seven public boat launches in the Belgrade Lakes. Katie lives in Waterville, attends Waterville High School, and thanks to Katie, a substantial fragment of Eurasian Milfoil was intercepted recently at the Great Pond Boat Launch.
Summer 2008 ends on a high note an early Labor Day Weekend full of the wholesome, happy family activities that are the trademark of this beautiful region: lake events, art exhibits, a parade, fireworks, sales, village settings
It took 11 workers 11-plus hours to make one woman's dream access to her lake cottage on Great Pond come true. And, like the good old-fashioned building bees of times past, this one, too, with neighbor helping neighbor, shows once again what makes this area special.
As the Kennebec District continues to push planting vegetative buffers along shorelines, I am always explaining to landowners the benefits and trying to help them visualize what a buffer on their property might look like. It is one thing to explain how one might look to a landowner and quite another to have them see an actual buffer in place.
