One Hundred Years on Ladies Delight Island
by David Dennett The Cobbosseecontee Yacht Club has announced that a very special celebration will occur on Saturday, August 9, at its lighthouse on Lake Cobbosseecontee. The club will mark the one hundredth anniversary of the Ladies Delight Lighthouse and dedicate a plaque honoring major donors of the 2001-2005 restoration project. The Ladies Delight Island Lighthouse, a unique twenty-five foot stone lighthouse on Lake Cobbosseecontee in Winthrop, was constructed in 1908 and presented to the Cobbosseecontee Yacht Club. It is one of the only inland waters lighthouses in the State of Maine. Located in the bay near the north end of the lake its light flashes 365 nights a year.
Placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984, this lighthouse had a severe list corrected in 2001, and a new top constructed of marine grade aluminum by welder Mark Newcomb of Augusta installed in July of 2005. Observers should find that this beloved old lighthouse now looks as majestic as it once did many, many decades ago! This beautiful structure was formally rededicated July 16, 2005 by retiring long-time CYC Commodore, Captain Hugh Stephens, still "Keeper of the Light." The CYC is conducting a raffle of a beautifully framed original pen and ink drawing of the restored lighthouse done by one of its members, well known local artist Paul Plumer. Tickets are on sale for the raffle at all CYC events during the summer, and prints are available at a cost of $45 for a signed and numbered print (100 only), and $25 for an unsigned print. Check the CYC website for further information on the Paul Plumer prints and more pictures of the lighthouse. David Dennett is Commodore of the Cobbosseecontee Yacht Club | ||
