The Belgrade Lakes Association, 100 years old in 2008, deserves a special "Happy Anniversary!" Representing Great and Long Ponds, the BLA is one of the oldest organizations of its kind in the state, definitely the oldest in the area, and an impressive contributor to local history.
This time of year, I go to a lot of lake association and road association annual meetings to talk about water quality. One question I get frequently is some variant of "What's the deal with phosphorus?"
The Ladies Delight Lighthouse, a 25-foot stone lighthouse on Lake Cobbosseecontee in Winthrop, was constructed in 1908 and presented to the Cobbosseecontee Yacht Club. It is one of the only inland waters lighthouses in the State of Maine. On August 9, the club will celebrate the centennial of this unique structure.

During the last few weeks the talk among fishermen has settled around the topic if water temperatures and where the fish are during this time year. Water temps have hit the low 80's on some of our local lakes, causing some fish to search out deeper and cooler haunts. The warmer water seems to influence different fish species in different ways.
