The Cosmic Modulator
"Visual entertainment" is how Bill Taylor describes the Cosmic Modulator, a term he has coined, and copyrighted, for the unique box kaleidoscopes he has created and sold since 2003 from an idea he conceived many years earlier. To construct the box, which is usually square but can be octagonal, Bill makes a base out of high-quality picture frame molding. The inside walls of the boxes are mirrors; the outside are usually panels covered with cloth. Each panel is upholstered by hand using acid free fabric glue. He cuts another three-sided frame for the top of the Modulator, and the whole box is then secured with a high quality super strong glue. Next come the objects that go with the theme, which can be Egyptian, dolphins, the Capitol, music, Colby College, or any number of custom requests. Each is unique signed and numbered. "You can put whatever you want in the box," Bill explains. And, you can change them or personalize them if you wish. They just have to be miniature.
To appreciate the finished product, the viewer must peer over the front edge of the box and look towards the back. The mirrors reflect to eternity. "I have so much fun making these and people of all ages have fun 'playing' with them by putting in different items," Bill states, adding "Little tea lights in the dark are very cool." Prices for the Cosmic Modulators range from $50 to $250. There are some in stock at Bill's Waterville store, The Framemakers,at 48 Main Street. Or, give him a theme and he'll create a one-of-a-kind Modulator just for you. For more information call | ||
