Find the Perfect Gift at the Artisan's Barn
"Look for the little Red Barn with the Blue Door" on the North Road in Readfield. Make sure after you find it you have plenty of time to browse and appreciate the work of the local artisans, "your friends, your neighbors," on display inside. Now in its second year of operation, the Artisan's Barn, according to owner Barbara Bright, is "sort of a co-op." The 18 participants come from Fayette, Readfield, Wayne, Augusta, Turner, Hallowell, Winthrop, Farmington, and Washington and each works two 3-hour shifts a month in the shop that is open weekly Thursday through Saturday. From weaving to jewelry to wood products to greeting cards, the displays in this small, efficient space built specially for its purpose highlight the extensive creative abilities of central Maine. Most of the artisans have their own businesses; some have their own shops, but to find their products all in one spot simplifies shopping, idea gathering, and "just looking."
In 2008 six new businesses have been added to the "co-op," expanding the range of products. But, Bright points out, the old favorites are constantly creating new and different items, which is a good reason for shoppers to return that and the scenic drive and setting. Each month one of the artisans offers one of their works as a door prize. The prize is drawn on the last Saturday of each month. The Artisan's Barn opens the weekend before Mothers Day and closes the weekend before Christmas. The hours are Thursday and Friday 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. For more information visit www.theartisansbarn.com or call | ||
