Belgrade Library Site Selected

Site of the new Belgrade Public Library.

The new library will be in Belgrade Depot, next to the Belgrade Central School, right.

At the recent annual meeting of The Friends of the Belgrade Public Library, the focus was on "exciting news!" A purchase and sale agreement has been signed for a new building site next to the Belgrade Central School in Belgrade Depot!

Presented by Friends' President, Judy Johnson, the announcement is the culmination of a year of researching, searching, and study. Most specifically a feasibility study conducted during the summer of 2007 by fund-raiser Lisa Walston of Bangor, who was also the Guest Speaker at the meeting, resulted in a recommendation for the Friends to go ahead and raise the funds for a new building. The goal set is $1.2 million, a committee has been formed under the chairmanship of Loyce Hazlett, and planning and mapping of a Capital Campaign is underway.

The new site in Belgrade Depot will provide ample space for the Library's book collection, will have room for patrons to sit and read, and will be within walking distance for the town's elementary and middle school children.

Although the fund-raising is currently in Phase I, the quiet phase, members of the community are encouraged to share in the enthusiasm and support, to ask questions, and to visit the current library at the Center for all Seasons and become involved. Summer hours are Tuesday, noon to 7 p.m.; Wednesday, 3 to 7 p.m.; Thursday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.; and Friday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The telephone number is 495-3508.
