Summertime 2008
This is my second season as author of the Watershed Wisdom column and I am looking forward to helping our readers better understand some of the natural processes that take place in our lakes and the science behind the measures that need to be taken to protect our lakes. Our first topic is one of the most basic and one of the most important: "What exactly is a watershed and why should I care?"
"Welcome home!" The greeting is sincere, direct, just the type of reception weary out-of-state travelers love to hear as they gaze around the collection of cozy cabins nestled, literally, on the sparkling waters of Long Pond. The Castle Island Camps are a family tradition dating to 1929.
The 30 Mile River Watershed Association (30 MRWA), which includes the ponds and lakes and communities from Kimball Pond in Vienna to the Androscoggin River in Leeds, has been recently formed to provide a framework of communication and action in areas critical to a healthy and protected watershed, including boat ramp inspections against invasive plants, a lake steward to encourage boating law compliance and safety, a dam committee, and various organizational formalities.
Let's be clear about what a watershed is. Even if you don't live along the shore of one of our waterways; perhaps you can't even see any water, you still live in and impact a watershed.
Welcome back, everyone! 2008 is going to be a year to remember. We had lots of snow, lots of cold weather, and lots of grouchy and half-frozen people walking around. Now that spring has sprung and hope has filled our hearts again, you might notice many smiling anglers strolling through the Village and chatting at the boat launches. We survived and are back to fish another day!
The banner's up, the promotions are on, and the welcome mat is out. Day's Store in Belgrade Lakes is celebrating its fiftieth anniversary, and like a true village general store it has arrived at this milestone by providing an uncountable array of goods and products. It also is a success story because it takes to heart its role as the hub of the community. Redisplay This Page in Printer-Friendly Format Home All 2008 Issues Next —> | ||||||||||||||||
