Day's Store Turns 50!

Janelle and Diane Day as children

The banner's up, the promotions are on, and the welcome mat is out. Day's Store in Belgrade Lakes is celebrating its fiftieth anniversary, and like a true village general store it has arrived at this milestone by providing an uncountable array of goods and products. It also is a success story because it takes to heart its role as the hub of the community.

"Always, as a family we thought it was important to be involved in the community," describes Diane Day Oliver who currently runs the store along with husband Kerry and who, even at the busiest of times, is the community's ambassador of information.

Looking back, Diane says, "The store was the last thing from my mind," even though the Day family lived upstairs until her last year of high school. Diane studied to be a teacher, but after one year teaching the legacy that began in 1958 when her grandparents, Jim and Mae Day bought the store, caught up with her. She went to work for her parents, Gary and Joyce, owners of Day's since 1972.

"Gary believed in sidewalk sales," Diane jokes, mostly because they will be brought back as part of the 50th celebration this summer. Other special events in the planning include music by the lake, movie night, and s'mores at sunset, special events honoring all past employees, and discounts in the bakery and deli, departments that have become a special draw.

Other specialties connected with the store are the excellent meats, the donuts, the extensive gift shop, Meggie O's fudge (which put daughter Megan through school) and ice cream.

"Ice cream has always been a part of Day's," Diane describes, but especially now with the Lakeside Scoops ice cream window open on Long Pond behind the store.

Throughout the summer everyone is invited to stop for an ice cream, enjoy a special event, and shop the many sales in celebrations of Day's 50th, they are encouraged to shop this unique general store in the heart of Belgrade Lakes, and they are welcome to just stop in and browse.

In summary, Diane states, "It's important that everyone who comes here feels like family!"
