There's No End To Friends

Summer's over, Friends aren't. The Friends of Cobbossee Watershed is a year round, nonstop planning, programming, educating entity that maintains an active office and staff, invites free membership, raises funds for on-going projects, and campaigns for increased awareness to protect and improve the 28 lakes and streams of the Cobbossee Watershed.

For children, it's off the Otter and into the classrooms. The Otter is the Friends well known and welcome 22' Avalon pontoon boat, famous for ice cream, information, and educational programs, that makes the rounds of the Cobbossee Watershed lakes during the summer, appears in parades, and visits events such as Kids Day in Capitol Park.

In the classrooms the watershed education continues with programs from a single lesson to a year-round watershed-based curriculum. (Non-classroom children's groups are also welcome to participate.) Through Friends Education Director Sarah Rodgers, children are taught the importance of the lakes, of aquatic life, and of the wetlands. Hands-on activities and field trips are included. Sarah can be reached at 621-4100 or sarah@watershedfriends.com.

For adults, it's time to look ahead. Next summer is only a plan away — a plan for your volunteer time, money, or membership activities. Examples of volunteer opportunities through Friends include: Courtesy Boat Inspections, Invasive Plant Patrols, Slow-the-Flow Play Days, the 5K Road Race, Office Support, Volunteer Management. Other opportunities exist on each of the individual lakes, through the lake associations, neighborhood road or shorefront organizations, youth camps, community budget or planning boards, publicity mediums.
