Summer days are now fleeting and few. Make the most of those that remain!
Those last, great, winding-down days of summer are here, dictated a little by the whims of weather and a lot by the schedules of school, and it's time for the many who love this region and this season to say so long. So long to summertime friends old and new, to the warm weather lifestyle, to the seasonal businesses, to vacationers, to the lakes.
When the Lakes Environmental Association initiated the Maine Milfoil Summit in 2000 and began promoting legislation to establish an invasive aquatic plant program, there was no clear idea of how many water bodies in Maine were infested. At this year's summit, Maine's new DEP commissioner announced that no new infestations had been discovered in 2005.
Quick action by volunteers has lessened concerns that Sand Pond in Litchfield, part of the Tacoma Lakes and 28-waterbody Cobbossee Watershed, had been exposed to a potential infestation of variable leaf milfoil.
Take a good look around the next time you are on one our lakes. You will most likely see camps, cottages, houses (sometimes shoulder to shoulder) and lawns lots and lots of lawns. As you may have heard, this phenomenon is not a good thing for the water quality of your lake.
