It's Time to Visit The Theater at MonmouthBy Lorette Comeau
On Main Street in Monmouth stands the pleasantly imposing building, Cumston Hall, which houses the town library, caucus rooms, and the much acclaimed Theater at Monmouth, also known as the Shakespearean Theater of Maine. The building itself is an architectural gem and is vividly reminiscent of the castles in Europe, certainly as elegant and stately, if not as large. Cumston Hall, replete with stained glass windows and ceiling murals in the theater, was dedicated to the town in 1900 by Dr. Charles Cumston. The entire building, including murals, was designed and created by the late Harry Cochrane, and is a wonderful example of Maine ingenuity and attitude of "Let's just do it!" He was a local craftsman who proved himself an artist in the many fields required to finish this gem of a building: architectural design, fine art painting, carpentry, masonry, stained glass design, etc. The professional theater; presents not only Shakespeare but a variety of productions, including musicals and comedies. It is active in introducing local school children to the finer art of dramatics. Any production is both memorable and enjoyable.
