"Bear" in truck in parade

Where water, woods and close-knit communities are the fabric of the countryside . . . where recreation, relaxation and a leisurely pace of life are the rewards of summer . . . where independence, individualism, and self sufficiency are the stuff of local lifestyles, on this 4th of July 2006, there are so many legacies and traditions, so many rituals and refuges, so many ways to celebrate this high mark of summer.

From the pre-dawn rite of fishing, to the inevitable and always delectable hot dog and hamburger cook out, from the refreshing breezes off lake or woods to the welcome (especially after all that rain) sun-drenched roadsides of parade routes, from the peaceful perspective of a schedule-free holiday weekend to the bustle of the crowds following busy festivities, the 4th of July stands for an array of seasonal celebrations.

Fireworks and music, parades and picnics, and all the other fixings of celebration will be richly available this July 4 in central Maine, in some cases starting early in the long weekend, in others concentrating on the historic day itself.

Augusta . . . Winslow . . . Winthrop . . . Belgrade Lakes . . . Farmington . . . Skowhegan . . . These celebrations are family-oriented events, wholesome, safe, good fun, and a short destination drive. Most of the programs include children's activities and contests. The locations are near waterways, rivers, streams, or lakes — remainders of the other opportunities and reasons to celebrate independence in this unique part of the world, reminders that it's possible to attend a 4th of July celebration and enjoy the recreation of the region, too.

So many ways to celebrate. Pick one — or more — and enjoy!
