Boats at Castle Island on Long Pond — Ready for the season!
Summer begins with Memorial Day, here among the lakes and waterways of central Maine. It begins not only with the patriotic traditions of parades, presentations, and visits to cemeteries, but also with a return to the lakes for those who cherish the outlets and activities, the adventure and recreation, the peacefulness and scenery of the woods and waters.
The ideal shoreline buffer strip consists of the three-tiered wooded area on shore (groundcover, shrubs and trees); the trees that have fallen into the water; and the aquatic plants near shore. And you thought vegetated buffer strips were simple!
The Town of Belgrade has three distinctive burial areas: Pine Grove and Woodside which face each other along Route 135, Ellis Cemetery near Salmon Lake, and the Quaker Burying Ground at the intersection of Routes 8 and 135. We thought that this would be a good time to provide a brief outline of how the cemeteries in Belgrade and their perpetual care are administered.
Barns, boats, camps and coastlines . . . country roads, rivers, woods and wildlife — all these, and much more that is endearing and familiar and nostalgically historic about the state of Maine, Tom Merriam portrays and preserves in his watercolors.
