Autumn arrives, color by changing color. Winter comes, chill by increasing chill. It is a wonderful time of year near the lakes and woods and central Maine towns, wonderfully energizing. The pace is more peaceful, the deadlines more definite, and the celebrations are extremely inviting.
Membership has tripled; recent fundraisers have brought in $60,000; and by the end of the season over 7,000 boat inspections for invasive plants will have been performed. These were just some of the highlights of the annual meeting of the Belgrade Regional Conservation Alliance on September 8.
"A major step up for everyone in the area," was how Congressman Tom Allen summarized the recent groundbreaking ceremony for the future Belgrade Regional Health Center.
This August, twelve citizen diplomats from Central Maine and beyond traveled to Kotlas, Greater Waterville's sister community in Russia. The delegation, which included Waterville Mayor Paul LePage, also visited Moscow and St. Petersburg during its seventeen day Russia sojourn.
Throughout the season, we did notice a neat coincidence on occasion. We'd start by working a weed bed that had been producing good fishing when suddenly the place seemed to be devoid of fish. It wasn't long before a northern pike would either be hooked or seen.
