BLA Annual Meeting to Present Gloeotrichia Information
Some call it tapioca; some call it bubbles If anyone is curious, or concerned, about the tiny globules sometimes seen floating in Great, Long and Snow/Messalonskee Ponds, the time to learn more is Sunday, August 14 at the Belgrade Lakes Association (Great and Long Ponds) 97th Annual Meeting. Friends, neighbors, residents, summer taxpayers, interested parties are invited for FREE ice cream sundaes and the meeting at the Belgrade Community Center for All Seasons on Route 27 in Belgrade Lakes. Sundaes and socializing will be from 12:30-1:30 p.m.; the meeting from 1:30-3 p.m. In a departure from its traditional meeting format of short reports of the past few years, the BLA 2005 schedule will feature guest speaker, Dr. Whitney King of Colby College, who will present information and answer questions about the 2005 Gloeotrichia Research Project.
Dr. King, Chairman of Colby College's Chemistry Department, has spent much of the past year and especially this summer studying the phenomenon called Gloeotrichia, a form of blue-green algae that may appear in lakes mid-summer for a short time, but has been increasingly visible the past three seasons in Great and Long Ponds. Last summer its presence prompted a more in depth and scientific study, which is the one currently being undertaken by Colby College under the auspices of the BLA. It also prompted the need for more observational and anecdotal tracking that is currently in the works and is being coordinated by BLA President Bruce Fenn. To date 120 volunteers are contributing to the project, 88 on Great Pond, by observing and noting Gloeotrichia in their section of the waterway, but many more are welcome. Please call Due to the Gloeotrichia report, the ongoing water quality management, the invasive plant monitoring, the plant inspection dives, the land trust initiative and a variety of other noteworthy watershed topics that provide valuable information to owners and vacationers throughout the Belgrades, the BLA has sent out 1800 notices "to pack up the kids, call the relatives, and let the lake neighbors
The agenda will also include reports on milfoil monitoring and water quality, election of officers, and the drawing for the winners of the 14-foot Lund fishing boat with 9 HP four-stroke motor and trailer donated by Hamlin Marine, the three sections of Shoremaster docks donated by Hammond Lumber Company, and a one-man Otter Kayak and paddle donated by Belgrade Canoe & Kayak.
