A Unique Classroom for an English Immersion

Immersion students at the Hallowell of the Kennebec River Rail Trail

Heading toward Hallowell on the Kennebec River Rail Trail

Chard explained

When six English Immersion students spent a day in Hallowell recently, downtown became a unique classroom.

Armed with questions designed to enhance their English and to introduce them to Hallowell, the students walked around Water Street looking for answers and adding a few queries of their own. Needless to say, in English or any language, the merchants were most helpful.

Highlights of the hunt included:

  • What is the name of a Maine gem that begins with "t"?
  • Where are the high water marks?
  • What four businesses are in that building?
  • Find a locally made coffee?
  • What is the grocery store on the comer? - Find a new vocabulary word in that store.
  • What three ethnic restaurants are on the river side of the street?
  • Where can you buy something frozen?
  • What does Slate's mean?
  • Find a store that sells games and trains.

The English Immersion program, which was organized this year by Waterville's Let's Talk Language School (873-0432), was formerly based in Skowhegan and run through SAD 54. It is part of the educational aspect of the Kennebec-Chaudière lntemational Corridor initiative. In addition to English classes, the program emphasizes activities that will familiarize students with local towns and businesses.
