One Stroke Painting Is Belgrader's SpecialtyFrom student to teacher, Linda Bradshaw of Belgrade has developed a niche for herself in the world of One Stroke Painting. It's a method she loves to share, and it's a means of involving other people in a love of painting. According to Linda, One Stroke Painting was developed by Donna Dewberry about 20 years ago and is increasing in popularity around the world. Dewberry frequently appears on PBS and QVC, demonstrating her painting techniques, and promoting her videotapes, books and Folk Art products. One Stroke Painting is a decorative painting technique that differs from traditional tole painting in that the blending, shading, and highlighting of the paint is accomplished by putting multiple colors (called double loading or multi-loading) on the paint brush and performing those effects with one stroke of the brush. With traditional tole painting, the blending, shading and highlighting are accomplished with multiple brush strokes allowing the paint to dry between strokes. This tends to make completion of the project a long process. One Stroke Painting projects are generally finished quickly; as the painting technique involves continuing to paint the project, start to finish, in one sitting. Very little time is involved in letting the paint dry between strokes, and often no time is allowed for the paint to dry, the technique often involves "wet-on-wet" painting. Often times preparing the surface for decorative painting takes longer than the decorative painting itself! One Stroke Painting is like the microwave cooking of the decorative painting world. It is fast, and with a little bit of practice, is easy to learn. This makes it ideal for the busy person who wants to create something pretty, but has limited time to dedicate to the creation of the project. One Stroke Painting adapts itself to painting on almost any surface: wood, glass, paper, metal, tile, paper maché, plastic, and cork, to name a few. One of Linda's favorite things to do is to try to create "trash to treasure projects" by taking an object that would normally be cast off, paint it with the One Stroke style in a pretty floral arrangement, and re-purpose the object. Linda currently teaches One Stroke Painting year round at Michaels Arts & Crafts in Augusta, and will teach this fall at Messalonskee High School in Oakland, Cony High School in Augusta, and Kennebec Learning Center in Augusta.
