Take a tour of "Yankee Ingenuity at Work," learn a lot about a famous Maine family, enjoy a scenic drive toward the mountains, and browse around a unique country town.
The Stanley Museum in Kingfield is located in the century-old, elegantly columned, wooden Stanley School. Inside today learning is still the focus with a lot of information and displays about Kingfield's identical twin inventors, F.O. and F.E. Stanley, who are famous for the Stanley Steamer automobile, but also invented the dry plate (for photography), made violins, and have an array of industrial advancements and architectural accomplishments to their credit.
Pictures by their sister, Chansonetta Stanley Emmons, an extremely talented international photographer are also part of the exhibit, but the highlights of the museum are the real steam cars.
Summer hours are Tuesday through Sunday, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., and by appointment. Call 265-2729 or visit the museum's web site for more information. The museum is at 40 School Street.
