The Snow Pond/Messalonskee Lake Association recently held its annual meeting. Those in attendance learned that another 6,000 splake will be released in the lake this year, that Messalonskee was the first site to be re-inhabited by eagles after their near-extinction in the '70's, that children caught wearing life jackets receive coupons for free sundaes, that there are only three legit ways to remove invasive plants, that the Town of Oakland has generously donated $3,000 toward the monitoring of its public boat landing, and that the pot luck supper that precedes the meeting is not to be missed.
Alumni of the short-lived Eastern Music Camp celebrated the 73rd anniversary of its founding on July 20 in Sidney.
This summer will mark the 22nd consecutive year for the presentation of original plays by Beverly Wight Smith of Mount Vernon. The two or three completely new plays that she has written each year are performed by a local cast of Mount Vernon and Vienna theater and history enthusiasts.
A lifetime boat lover who has been working and playing with boats since the age of twelve, Bob Bassett of Kimball Pond Boat Barn in Vienna is very close to his career dream. His goal is to get out of carpentry and work on boats. "I want to specialize in wood-canvas canoe restoration," Bob states.
