Historical Plays To Be Presented In Vienna

Belles of Vienna

The Belles of Vienna

This summer will mark the 22nd consecutive year for the presentation of original plays by Beverly Wight Smith of Mount Vernon. The two or three completely new plays that she has written each year are performed by a local cast of Mount Vernon and Vienna theater and history enthusiasts.

Beverly has taken a leading role in at least one of the plays every year since she started writing them, and many years she has been in two plays. Almost the same record has been achieved by local actor Burton Gilman, who has had a starring role for 21 of the 22 years.

This year there will be three plays on the program. "School Days in Vienna," performed primarily by children, and "Aunt Hannah's Premonition," were both written by Beverly. The third play, "Violets Forever," is the first by new "playwright" Cheryl Herr-Rains.

The plays will run Thursday through Saturday, July 29, 30, and 31 at 7:30 p.m., with a Saturday matinee at 2:00 p.m. on the 31st. All plays will be performed at the historic, 1888 Vienna Union Hall, which is being restored.
