Bean Hole Beans

Dig a hole, build a blazing fire, bury beans in a cast iron pot among the burning coals, leave for 24 hours, unbury, and enjoy. . . .

This unique cooking technique is a Maine tradition that developed during spring log drives down Maine's roaring rivers, when year after year advance cooks traveled ahead of the work crew and prepared the next evening's hot, high-protein meal.

Today, bean hole beans are far outnumbered by oven-baked meals and most public suppers offer a tasty homemade array of the latter. However, the occasional community celebration still provides genuine bean hole beans.

An especially popular bean hole bean supper the one is sponsored annually by the Belgrade Fire Department. Dating to the 1960's, this supper three types of beans cooked with a secret recipe. The proceeds help buy equipment for the local volunteer fire and rescue teams based in North Belgrade, Belgrade Depot, and Belgrade Lakes. Held annually on the first Saturday in August, this year's supper will be on August 7, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., at the Belgrade Community Center for All Seasons on Route 27 in Belgrade Lakes.
