Norbert Twitchell: Maine Humorist

Tales that make people laugh

Norbert Twitchell with two friends.

"I specialize in lies," jokes Yankee humor guru, Norbert Twitchell of Vienna.

Endearing tales, is a more accurate description of the quips he reels off about life in rural Maine, drawing on his own upbringing as a native of Oxford County (his wife's people come from Vienna) and the Pine Tree State and adding a spicy dose of keen observation.

Tales of small towns, farms, fishing, and colorful local characters, told with a heavy Maine accent and a New England deadpan demeanor evoke empathy and laughter from his audiences.

He also is not above the occasional tweak at flatlanders. "When I go to Rhode Island I have to explain to them that past-ah is not spaghetti," he casually mentions as an aside in a tale about church suppers.

Norbert's stories are rich in comparisons and descriptions such as, "a new minister fresh out of the wrapper," and keeping alive "the spirit of competitive backyard gardening."

Although it is impossible to justly put Norbert's tales on paper and have them meaningful unaccompanied by his timing, accent, careful incorporation of local color, and appropriate old-time attire, at least one punch line is in order, so here's an example:

—"Are there any criminal lawyers in Franklin County?"
—"Yes, three, but we don't have enough evidence to convict."

Does Norbert have any secrets of his unique trade?

"It's easier to change the audience than it is to change the stories," he smiles.
