Messalonskee Boat Ramp Update

Belgrade Boat Ramp

The boat ramp on Messalonskee Lake in Belgrade.

In a continuing effort to curtail the spread of invasive milfoil in Maine, restricted open hours will be in effect again this season on the Messalonskee Lake boat ramp on Route 27 in Belgrade. The reasons?

The monitoring, inspection, and survey program implemented by the Commissioners of Conservation, Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, and Environmental Protection during 2003 showed that 43% of boats exiting Messalonskee at the Route 27 launch were carrying plant fragments. Boater interviews also indicated that 10% planned to visit Great Pond next. Both figures are identical to those recorded in 2002 — which were instrumental in the initial restricted-hours decision.

During the remainder of May, the ramp will be open Saturday, Sunday, and Monday (Memorial Day), from sunrise to sunset. June hours will commence with Saturday and Sunday, sunrise to sunset.

Lake Messalonskee has an easily accessible public boat launch in downtown Oakland on Belgrade Street.
