Rail Trail Connects Four Kennebec River Communities
Augusta Hallowell Farmingdale Gardiner! The Kennebec River Rail Trail follows one of the most scenic and historic sections of this beautiful waterway. With links between Hallowell and Augusta, Gardiner and Farmingdale already finished due to grants and local matching funds, and the $160,000 fundraising campaign for the Farmingdale and Hallowell connection (to be finished in 2006) completed, the 6.5 mile route is an exciting reality. Initiated in the early 90s, the four-phase Kennebec River Rail Trail, which follows alongside the route of the existing train tracks, has gradually gathered supporters and momentum ever since. A major attraction for walkers, bicyclists, joggers, and skiers of all ages and levels of speed, it is safe, traffic-free, paved, and provides delightful destinations for scenery, socializing, shopping and historic sites. It also reduces driving congestion and pollution, promotes fitness, and benefits area businesses. Plans for the final phase of the Kennebec River Rail Trail will be to connect it to the waterfront parks in Augusta and Hallowell. Everyone is welcome to use the Kennebec River Rail Trail. Maps of the trail are available at local businesses and tourism offices or by writing to: Kennebec River Rail Trail, P.O. Box 2195, Augusta, ME 04338. Financial supporters and volunteer workers are encouraged to join Friends of the Kennebec River Rail Trail. For more information, visit the Kennebec River Rail Trail web site. | ||
