2004 Conservation Corps Director All Set For Summer
"A full season with two busy crews," is the goal of new Conservation Corps Director, Hilary Walter. Hilary, who lives on Long Pond in Mount Vernon, brings a lot of enthusiasm and qualifications to this unique job. From a personal perspective, she "loves fishing and birding and canoeing," dating back to her childhood among the Wisconsin lakes. Having spent high school in Portland and all her summers working on a coastal island, Hillary says Maine is her location of choice. And, with a formal education in environmental biology and graduate work toward behavioral ecology (both at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland), she's set to go. In fact, she's ready. The Conservation Corps position, as of this year, is a six-month position and Hilary has been hard at work since the first of April. Now in its ninth year, the Conservation Corps which is a branch of the Belgrade Regional Conservation Alliance serves the dual purpose of providing protection for the lakes and jobs for area youth. The Corps does erosion control work including planting trees and shrubs for buffers, stabilizing eroding shorelines with riprap, lining ditches, and building water bars and drainage ways all techniques to help maintain water quality. "We're always looking for jobs," Hilary emphasizes. Although any time throughout the year requests are welcome, the earlier in the summer the more likely to get work done this season. Hilary also is available for site visits and evaluations. For more information, call Hilary at 495-6039, visit her in the BRCA office upstairs in the Boathouse in downtown Belgrade Lakes, or go to the Conservation Corps page on the BRCA's web site. The web site also includes work request form. | ||
