Summertime in the Belgrades

On the Channel . . .

Boathouses on the ChannelBoathouses, water lilies, boats bobbing on moorings, and definitely ducks. The Belgrade Lakes Stream -- or Channel -- is a unique waterway where much of the feel of the old remains. Original wooden boats may be parked or hung (they're suspended by chains from the ceiling for storage during the winter), the lilies look like a French Impressionist painting, the boats add color and character, and the ducks provide a hospitable welcome.

Once a meandering, rocky stream connecting Great Pond to Long Pond, the waterway was dredged by Central Maine Power when the dam was used to generate electricity. Today, the dam generates some of the best fishing around, is a great site for whitewater rescue teams and dive teams to practice, and provides a musical backdrop to picturesque Peninsula Park on Long Pond.

To appreciate the Channel, there's a great view from the Belgrade Lakes bridge. Paddleboats can be rented at Home Entertainment Resources ( H.E.R.), the home of the mannequins.

Waterwise, it can be accessed from Great Pond diagonally across the cove from Great Pond Marina or the Public Boat Landing.

Remember, no-wake speed only (i.e. 5 mph or no waves), stay within the markers, pass on the right, and be considerate of other craft -- especially canoes, kayaks, and rowboats.

There's docking space for customers at H.E.R., The Mill Stream Cafe, and The Village Inn. Otherwise, turn around at the bridge.
